From the Veranda
Japan Countryside II
11” x 15” - Mixed–media on cold press paper - 2024
(water colour, oil pastels and colour pencils)
This artwork continues an exploration of the Japanese countryside as a space of stillness, rhythm, and quiet continuity. The composition opens from a domestic threshold, framing the landscape as a lived view rather than a distant scene. Rolling hills and layered fields stretch across the horizon, creating a natural sense of depth and calm movement.
The interplay of watercolour, oil pastels, and pencil colours builds a surface that feels both structured and fluid, allowing the landscape to breathe through texture and light.
Subtle tonal transitions in the sky echo shifting weather and time, while the grounded earth tones anchor the composition in stability and warmth. Human presence is implied through architecture and cultivated land rather than figures, reinforcing the harmony between daily life and nature.
The work does not seek photographic realism, but emotional resonance — a translation of atmosphere, memory, and place. As part of an ongoing series, this piece reflects the countryside as a meditative environment where space, silence, and simplicity become visual language.
