The idea for this painting came from a recipe I came across on social media—one that paired pears with whole spices to create an autumn dessert. That combination immediately evoked the sweetness of changing leaves and the warmth that begins to settle in as colder days approach. In the painting, the pears sit beside spices traditionally associated with comfort and ritual, bringing with them a sense of domestic familiarity.
I was drawn to how these contrasting elements—soft fruit and sharp spices—could share the same space without competing. The cinnamon sticks and star anise form small geometric accents that offset the roundness of the pears, creating a quiet visual rhythm.
This contrast felt similar to how memories take shape: broad, gentle impressions held together by sharp, vivid details.
The textures in the piece become a dialogue—smooth pear skin against the dry edges of spice, the wooden board grounding everything, and the fabric adding movement around them. With controlled lighting, the spices cast long shadows that act like subtle punctuation marks within the composition. Placing everything on the board over soft folds of fabric turns the scene into a domestic moment, a sensory memory caught in stillness.
