This painting continues my ongoing exploration of pears as a central subject within the series, shifting the setting from their natural state into a more intimate culinary environment. While earlier works in the series present pears in their raw, freshly gathered form, this piece reflects a later stage in that journey—where the fruit becomes part of a prepared dish.
My interest in poached pears began after moving to Canada. Experiencing winter for the first time as someone from a tropical climate was both surprising and comforting. The quiet cold, the soft snow, and the warmth of seasonal food created a lasting impression. During that time I discovered the dish of poached pears, prepared with warming spices and simple ingredients. That sensory experience—warmth against cold, comfort within the stillness of winter—became the inspiration behind this painting.
The composition presents butter-roasted poached pears served in a warm iron skillet, topped with mascarpone cream and cinnamon granola, with scattered spices suggesting the ingredients used in their preparation. The reddish warmth of the wooden board and golden tones of the pears contrast with the cooler, darker surfaces of the skillet, cloth, and metal fork. This interplay of warm and cool tones mirrors the feeling of preparing and enjoying a comforting dish during the coldest days of winter.
Through this work, the pear shifts from a natural form to a shared experience—moving from orchard to kitchen, from object to memory. The painting carries a quiet sense of warmth and nostalgia, reflecting how food, place, and season can become intertwined within personal memory.
